Economic Aspects of Environmental Policy in the Mushroom Industry in the Netherlands

  • Chapter
Book cover Plant Production on the Threshold of a New Century

Abstract

Environmental policy affects the mushroom industry in the Netherlands at two levels: 1. regulations for compost production on centralized, large scale composting facilities concerning the emission of stench and ammonia; 2. regulations for mushroom farms, mainly concerning the emission of chemicals in the wastewater. Measures taken by composting companies will reduce emission of stench and ammonia before 1995 to almost zero. Emission on mushroom farms will be reduced before 2000 to almost 10 % of residues of chemicals applied in mushroom growing. This will increase average production costs (excluding harvesting labour and delivery costs) with 11 % to Dfl 2.22 per kg, mainly because of a growing compost price. In the past two years, production grew with 15 % p.a., mainly because of an increasing number of crops per m2 resulting from changes in compost production.
