Abstract
The manuscript presents a formal model of flexibility for solutions of problems in general. Next, it elaborates a state transition model of the real world and discusses the relationship with the previous model. Three design principles follow from the above. Finally, examples in the domain of flexible manufacturing illustrate the theory.
