Abstract

Switzerland has five light water reactors; 39 percent of their electricity is generated from nuclear power. The Swiss distinguish between low-level (LLRW), intermediate-level (ILRW), and high-level wastes (HLRW). LLRW includes waste materials with short-lived, low-level radionuclides; whereas, ILRW consists generally of materials with short-lived radionuclides, although ILRW materials may contain a limited component of long-lived radionuclides. HLRW includes all material with high-level, short-and long-lived radionuclides (Kemp, 1989).
