Abstract

The thermodynamic stabilities at high pressures of all three rock-forming feldspar end-members are strongly dependent upon the bulk chemistry of the system under consideration, but even in the absence of other components they break down at pressures below 4 GPa to denser minerals. Despite these limits on the thermodynamic stabilities of feldspars they can still be studied to pressures in excess of 5 GPa at low to moderate temperatures under which conditions the feldspars are kinetically stable. The behaviour of feldspars upon compression is reviewed and the available bulk moduli data is summarised. These data are used to demonstrate that the major compressional mechanism of all feldspars is one of T-O-T bond bending. Recent single-crystal diffraction studies have also revealed that some feldspars undergo non-quenchable displacive phase transitions at high pressures, and the data for transitions in anorthite, microcline and sanidine is reviewed.
