Infrared Spectroscopy of Supernovae

  • Chapter
Infrared Astronomy with Arrays

Abstract

We present early-time near-infrared spectra of the type Ia supernova 1991T and latetime spectra of SNe 1991T and 1987A obtained with IRIS on the AAT and CGS4 on UKIRT. A large mass of iron is present in the ejecta of type Ia supernovae. The early-time 1.2 μm depression in the Ia spectra is due to a lack of line blanketing opacity rather than a blend of absorbers. Late-time spectra of SN 1987A obtained at an unprecedented 5 years after explosion are shown.
