Temperature and Gravitational Potential

Abstract

It is argued that thermal equilibrium of spatially extended systems is characterized by the presence of a “global” temperature, but that there also exists a “local” temperature, which is sensitive to the value of the gravitational potential. It is further asserted that thermometers read out the local temperature.
