Abstract

Here I discuss the techniques used to determine the density and temperature of the hot X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium as a function of radius in clusters of galaxies. These data can then be used to measure not only the mass distribution of the gas but also of the total gravitational mass to whose potential the gas is responding. Recent spatially resolved data from the ROSAT satellite, when taken together with high quality integrated X-ray spectra from GINGA, are shown to provide very strong constraints on the distributions of these components in clusters. The constraints lead to values of the baryonic mass fraction in (at least) rich clusters which are not easily reconciled with limits obtained from cosmic nucleosynthesis models.
