The Masses of Clusters of Galaxies

Abstract

Clusters of galaxies as the largest evolved astronomical objects play a particular role in cosmology. The most interesting parameter characterizing these objects is surely their mass. Recent X-ray observations of the extended hot intracluster medium of several nearby clusters with the ROSAT Observatory provided the means for more reliable mass determinations than previously possible. The mass of the intracluster gas can be determined more directly and an evaluation of the gas fraction of the total clusters mass yields values of 10% to over 30% for rich clusters and somewhat smaller values for less massive systems. Two important conclusions from the finding of these large gas mass fractions are that most of the intracluster gas must be primordial and that there is much more baryonic material in the universe than is observed in galaxies. The chemical analysis of the intracluster gas in small galaxy groups revealed the surprising result that their metallicities are smaller than those for richer groups and clusters.
