Abstract
A hallmark of intelligent systems is the ability to learn. Despite the rich set of examples of learning in the biological realm, synthetic systems tend to learn poorly, if at all. A better understanding of the nature and mechanisms of learning should enable designers to better emulate the abilities of natural systems.
