New Small Towns of Israel: Successes and Failures

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: The GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 30))

Abstract

One of the most significant phenomena that took place in Israel in the short time span from 1948 to 1963 was the establishment of numerous small towns. Despite the fact that the building and construction of new towns is a well-known activity throughout the world, the Israeli experience stands out because more than 30 such towns, which in 1991 contained a population of 675,900, were established in the short period of 15 years. Together they altered the nation’s urban system and its hierarchy of urban places.
