Abstract

The urbanization process incorporates a complex interplay of socio-economic, political, technological, geographical and cultural factors. Although they are all mediated through the social organization of production, variations in the levels of urbanization and economic development are strongly related to historical variations in the social and economic develop- ment of a nation. In the area that now constitutes Pakistan, development began within a system created and controlled by a colonial power; Pakistan is now developing within the structural constraints of a previous socio-economic system.
