Abstract

The CALPHAD technique of assessing the properties of a system is reviewed. Its great value for multicomponent systems is stressed. Simple thermodynamic models for various kinds of phases are reviewed, starting with a definition of ideal solution which depends on the structure of the phase. The compound energy model is defined and applied to ionic phases, in particular solution phases with the spinel structure. The two-sublattice model for ionic liquids is defined. Finally, the sialon system is discussed.
