Abstract

Natural populations of grasses are widely used as genetic resources in breeding programmes. Therefore many plant breeders are collecting populations from the wild. Collection can either be systematic on a given area, or oriented by ecogeographic data. Particularly, in order to improve the adaptation to specific climatic conditions, plant breeders are looking for populations growing under similar conditions, which may have selected favourable genes. However the test of the efficiency of natural selection for the breeding objectives of Man is not obvious.
