Abstract
The organelles of plants in each phylum have their specific ultrastructure as first suggested by Ueda (1961) who examined the structures of chloroplasts in 25 species from 9 phyla. He found that species that belong to a particular phylum have the same type of chloroplast in terms of the arrangement of thylakoids (Ueda 1961). Gibbs (1962) reported similar results from an examination of chloroplasts in 13 species from 9 phyla. Ueda (1961) pointed out a very exiting (and early) observation in the ultrastructural perspective of the chloroplast-like granules from Glaucocystis nostochinearum which may represent endosymbionts belonging to the Cyanophyceae. Thus, it became possible to classify an unspecified plant species into the appropriate group from the ultrastructure of its chloroplasts. Since then, many detailed studies on the ultrastructure of chloroplasts have been carried out in connection with taxonomic investigations (Dodge 1973; Mattox and Stewart 1984).
