Abstract

Diseases are a major constraint to the successful cultivation of faba bean, chickpea, lentil, and pea. The major diseases include damping-off, wilt and root rots, spots and blights, rusts, and mildews, although viruses and nematodes also affect these crops. These diseases have been controlled through biological, chemical, and physical methods, although biological methods that include host-plant resistance have received most attention. Thus far, only limited efforts have been made on the integrated control of these diseases. The potential methods and their scope for use in the integrated control in both developing and developed countries are highlighted. Integrated control packages that include the use of resistant/tolerant cultivars, healthy seeds, improved cultural practices, seed and foliar treatments, and biological agents are outlined for controlling the economically important diseases. The need and scope of the integrated management of these diseases are emphasized.
