Pressure Dependence of Solvent Effects in Elementary Reactions in Dense Media

Part of the book series: The Jerusalem Symposia on Quantum Chemistry and Biochemistry ((JSQC,volume 26))

Abstract

The investigation of photoinduced conformational changes in cis-and trans-stilbene in dense solvents provides a test for models of reactions in condensed phase. Studies of the pressure- and temperature-dependences of the dynamics of transient absorption spectra allow, to some extent, to separate dynamic and static reagent-solvent interactions. In the high-damping regime, diffusion-controlled barrier crossing rates often are found to be inversely proportional to the solvent viscosity, ruling out major contributions from frequency-dependent friction.
