Abstract
The Government of Bhutan recognizes the role of research for the development of agriculture in the uniquely diverse environments of Bhutan. It has provided strong policy leadership and support for the integration of a natural resource management (NRM) perspective into the agricultural research agenda. Research has been reorganized to reflect more closely the interdependencies between crops, livestock, and trees found in traditional land-use systems. This account of the transformed research program illustrates some of the policy, institutional, and management changes that this implies. Computerized information systems and methods of systems research are likely to be particularly useful in the future for the diverse environments in this mountainous terrain.
