Abstract

In this chapter we focus on biological applications of the NMR of liquids. (For excellent books and reviews on the subject, see Ernst et al. (1987), Derome (1987), Sanders and Hunter (1987), Martin and Crouch (1991), and Wuthrich (1986)). However, rather than examining the vast array of high resolution, multi-dimensional, multi-nuclear experiments that can be performed on proteins, nucleic acids, and small-molecule natural products to determine their three-dimensional structure, we focus here instead on a particularly relevant case: the use of solution NMR to report back information about the bound-state conformation of a small molecule. In this way, we employ certain advantages (simplicity, sensitivity) of solution NMR to provide information about a large molecular assembly that can be best described as a solid.
