Abstract

Solid state NMR experiments are described to study a polymer composite and polymer blends. The mechanical properties of composites of polyamide-6 and silica are significantly improved when a coupling agent has been added. We show that this coupling agent reacts with the silica surface and partly with the organic polymer. Many investigations have shown that the polymer blend, poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA), forms a compatible blend, i.e. they mix very well. Experiments reviewed here show that on a molecular scale this mixing is not so perfect. New triple-resonance experiments show how the interface between PVDF and PMMA can be quantitatively studied.
