Abstract

OH/IR stars are probably superior to all other objects as probes of the gravitational potential in the central parts of the Galaxy. More than 500 OH/IR stars have been found within the sky area |l| < 30°, |b| < 30° in various surveys. By combining all the data sets it is shown that the slope of the l-υ diagrams decreases with increasing maximum distance from the centre. This can be interpreted as the consequence of an axisymmetric logarithmic potential from about 10 pc to about 1 kpc with a rotation velocity of 130 ± 30kms-1. The rotation velocity seems to be increasing slowly outside 1 kpc.
