Abstract
The preceding chapters have examined various aspects of sediment deformation and dewatering in the context of different experimental, theoretical and geological conditions. The main purpose of this chapter is to consider some geological situations where the interaction of these processes is particularly well illustrated. The examples are taken from sediments that have accreted along plate boundaries in a submarine, and therefore water-rich, environment. A common feature in this setting is the occurrence of the materials known as shale-matrix mélanges and scaly clays (Hsü 1968; Biju-Duval et al. 1984; Raymond 1984; Taira et al. 1988; section 9.4.3).
