Abstract
Selenium-containing glutathione peroxidases are found in red blood cells and in the plasma, the two major forms being structurally and antigenically distinct. As natural antioxidants, they are responsible for the reduction of peroxidase and organic acid radicals. The production of plasma glutathione peroxidase by renal tubular cells suggests that plasma levels may be used in assessment of renal tubular dysfunction. Reduced plasma levels are also indicative of selenium nutritional status.
