Abstract
Lactoferrin is an 80 kDa glycoprotein originally isolated from human milk where its affinity for iron imparts a bacteriostatic effect. Lactoferrin is secreted into the plasma from the secondary granules of the polymorpho-nuclear leucocytes. Serum levels of lactoferrin provide a marker of neutrophil activity independent from that afforded by measurement of myeloperoxidase.
