Abstract
Haloperidol is an antipsychotic agent used in the treatment of both acute and chronic psychoses. It has useful sedative and antiemetic activity. It is metabolized in the liver and undergoes enterohepatic recycling. There is a wide inter-subject variability in clearance with plasma half-life varying from 10 to 40 hours. Haloperidol produces phenothiazine-like side-effects such as anti-muscarinic actions and extrapyramidal dysfunction. The suggested therapeutic range in plasma is 3-10 ng/ml.
