Abstract

The main theme of this book is assessment of achievement - a term which can be used in a number of different ways. In some of the other chapters, assessment refers to the assessment of a student’s knowledge and understanding of a specific discipline. However, it is also important to discover how well students have developed their learning skills. Particularly during the first year at university, many students encounter difficulties which can lead to failure and dropout. And these difficulties are often attributable, at least in part, to ineffective study skills and strategies. This chapter reports a project which is using a computer package to identify and advise such students. It complements the chapters by Garcia and Pintrich, Geisler-Brenstein and Schmeck, and Vizcarro and her colleagues which also address the topic of study skills.
