Abstract
The harvesting by plants of energy from sunlight, and carbon and nitrogen from the atmosphere (by photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, respectively), and their conversion into organic compounds, together with the mining of mineral nutrients from deep within the subsoil provide the essential requirements for life in the soil.
