Abstract
This chapter deals with the colloidal properties of some papermaking raw materials and particularly with their electrokinetic behaviour and its relation to the surface charge characteristics of these materials. Papermaking colloidal systems include cellulose fines and fibres, mineral fillers and pigments, natural and synthetic additives as well as dissolved or colloidal material originating from the raw materials used in papermaking. A thorough understanding of the electrokinetics of papermaking materials is essential in order to be able to control the retention and dewatering agents added to the paper machine wet end and to control the adsorption and deposition of a number of functional chemicals such as internal sizing agents, dry- and wet-strength resins, etc. This chapter briefly summarises the origin and some structural features of the electrical double layer.
