Abstract
Composites are increasingly used in the aerospace, aircraft, marine, motor and oil industries and many good references to the theory and applications of composites in those industries are available [1–5]. The design process, procedure and optimization methods for the design of composite components are outlined in Ref. [6]. Iterative design tools are available to provide the designer the facility to rapidly analyse different composite structural configurations and to converge to an appropriate solution [7].
