Abstract
Public health involves the maintenance, protection and promotion of health of the population as a whole, rather than on an individual basis. These aspects are not mutually exclusive, as some policies may seek to reduce the number of those who require individual attention. There are three broad areas which are fundamental to public health in respect of diet and nutrition, including iron:

Scientific understanding of the links between diet and health.

Monitoring of dietary intake and nutrient status.

Public health policies to maintain/improve nutrient status and health.
