Impact of environmental change, species introductions and ecological interactions on the fish stocks of Lake Victoria

The Impact of Species Changes in African Lakes

Part of the book series: Chapman & Hall Fish and Fisheries Series ((FIFI,volume 18))

Abstract

Lake Victoria was traditionally regarded as a cichlid lake on account of the predominance of these species in the fish community (Greenwood, 1966). The cichlid fauna included two indigenous tilapiine species (Graham, 1929) and, through endemic explosive speciation (Greenwood, 1965), about 300 species of haplochromines (Van Oijen et al., 1981). In addition, four exotic tilapiine species were introduced into the lake during the early 1950s (EAFFRO, 1964). There were only about 50 non-cichlid fish species in the lake (Lowe-McConnell, 1975).
