Abstract
The goal of any arthroplasty is to restore and maintain mobility and to eliminate pain. The three major functions of the elbow joint are: (1) to serve as a link in the upper extremity system that positions the hand, (2) to provide a fulcrum that allows the elbow flexors to generate sufficient force for lifting, and (3) to serve as a weight bearing joint in individuals requiring walking aids. All currently used prostheses provide satisfactory motion for of daily living (Bryan and Money, 1979;Inglis and Pellicci, 1980).
