Abstract

Most marine protected area (MPA) programmes are enshrined in legislation. Sites are designated under statute and management, or prohibition of activities within the protected area, is generally supported by additional regulations. A different approach, which has been practised in the Philippines and the UK for some years, is to rely on voluntary cooperation to protect sites. This chapter describes the contribution such initiatives can make to an MPA programme with particular reference to experience in the UK. Examples from the Philippines are described in more detail in Chapter 4, which looks at community involvement in both statutory and voluntary MPAs.
