Part of the book series: Understanding Chemical Reactivity ((UCRE,volume 11))

Abstract

We investigate hopping rates in periodic potentials. In the limit of small damping, multiple barrier crossing, i.e. hopping between non-adjacent potential wells, becomes important. It is shown that these multiple hopping rates can be obtained systematically in terms of the lowest lying band of eigenvalues of the Fokker-Planck equation. We study multiple jump rates as well as jump length distributions from strong to weak friction.
