Abstract

The large territory of the central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan, located in the stable interior of Asia, is uniquely suited for sensitive monitoring of global seismicity, and nuclear explosions. The great distance from major oceans, low levels of cultural and seismic activity, and the excellent transmission characteristics of the exposed rock of the Kazakh platform provide locations for low-noise, low-attenuation recording sites. As part of the Soviet program for nuclear testing and global monitoring of nuclear explosions, extensive facilities for seismic stations were developed in Kazakhstan, with special care taken to identify low-noise sites with high sensitivity for teleseismic recording. Some of these facilities have recently been made available by the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan for international experiments and data exchange. This paper describes the initial evaluation of the noise characteristics and sensitivity of eight locations in Kazakhstan based on data from newly-installed broadband digital seismographs and the reactivation of an existing 21-element array.
