Abstract

The dynamic behavior of fluxons in a current biased long Josephson junction provides a system for studying quantum tunneling of a macroscopic variable, the total magnetic flux through the junction. Adjacent Fiske steps on the I-V curve provide potential wells where, at appropriate bias conditions and temperatures, tunneling can be observed. The junction parameters determine the tunneling behavior of the variable; it is observed to be incoherent. However, for certain conditions the system may exhibit coherent behavior.
