Abstract

A field study using Isotope tracer technique has been carried out to evaluate recharge to groundwater due to applied irrigation under different crops viz. wheat, paddy and sugarcane in three canal command areas of Uttar Pradesh having different hydrogeological conditions. As a result of this study the average recharge to groundwater due to applied irrigation has been worked out as 25 to 32%, 51 to 59% and 27 to 40% for wheat, paddy and sugarcane respectively. The study indicates that Isotope tracer technique provides better alternate to evaluate recharge due to applied irrigation under different crops and consequently results in better planning of optimum use of water resources.
