Abstract

The RNA polymerase sigma factor σN is unique amongst bacterial RNA polymerase sigma factors both in terms of its structure and in the mechanism of transcription initiation mediated by the EσN holoenzyme (Kustu et al., 1989; Merrick,1993). σN is widely distributed amongst the eubacteria and is required for transcription of a wide variety of genes, including for example flagellar genes in Caulobacter, xylene degradation genes in Pseudomonas, hydrogenase genes in A Icedigenes and nitrogen fixation genes in many, though not all, diazotrophs. The σN structural gene, rpoN, has now been cloned and characterised from at least 15 genera and in the majority of cases where sequence analysis has extended beyond rpoN a conserved set of linked genes has been identified (Merrick and Coppard, 1989; Merrick, 1993).
