Abstract
In order to understand how the nitrogenases work at the atomic level, it is essential that the fundamental chemistry underlying the reactions of the enzymes is well defined (Evans et al, 1993). The chemistry that has to be addressed falls into two headings: the transformations of the substrates and the reactivity of iron-sulfur-based clusters (Figure 1).
