Abstract
Observations of the diffuse bands at 5780, 5797, 5849 and 6614 Å have been obtained towards a number of stars in the southern Milky Way. The sample includes lines of sight passing through predominantly diffuse cloud material, stars lying behind denser clouds, and a few stars at high Galactic latitude. The effect of the interstellar environment on the strengths and relative strengths of the diffuse bands is considered. The relationship of the diffuse bands to reddening varies significantly between the local environments sampled. The λ5797 and λ6614 diffuse bands appear to arise from different carriers. It is found that the λ5780 diffuse band is weakened with respect to reddening and with respect to λ5797 and λ5849 along lines of sight passing through the denser clouds sampled here.
