Abstract
Photofragmentation of isolated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) cations has been studied, using an ion trap and irradiation by visible light. This experiment provides indications about the selection among PAHs that can result from differences in photostability. In some cases, the fragment remaining after dissociation seems to be more resistant than the parent ion itself. In the interstellar medium, such fragments might then be more abundant than PAH cations, and should be considered in the search for DIB carriers. From a spectroscopic point of view, the exact line positions cannot be measured precisely, but results concerning the regions of absorption and the oscillator strength are obtained. These results are complementary to those given by rare gas matrix experiments.
