Laboratory Studies of Highly Unsaturated Carbon Chains and the Diffuse Interstellar Bands

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 202))

Abstract

Highly unsaturated hydrocarbon chains, identified by radioastronomy, are known to be important constituents of dark molecular clouds (see chapter by Thaddeus in this volume). Such species have also been proposed to play a significant role in diffuse clouds, and in fact may be related to the absorption features of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) (Douglas 1977; Smith, Snow and York 1977; Bell, Feldman and Matthews 1983; Thaddeus et al. 1993). The article of Douglas on this topic provides an especially useful guideline, pointing out the required spectral features and underlying physical phenomena. However, direct, gas-phase absorption matches from laboratory settings are sought to completely identify the carrier of a given DIB.
