Studies of Model Systems for Intermolecular Interactions in Proteins

Abstract

This contribution presents some spectroscopic investigations of vibrational interactions in simple liquid amides and aqueous solutions of proteins The studies have been performed experimentally by IR- and Raman spectroscopy, but inelastic neutron scattering is certainly becoming a very important tool in this context, as shown by Dr. F. Fillaux in his plenary lecture. Our main purpose is to discuss vibrational interactions including transfer of vibrational energy from one molecule to another in the liquid state and in solution. Amides can be considered as model systems for hydrogen bonded macromolecules of biological interest, and also some proteins are considered. The ultimate goal is to obtain insight into interactions and energy transport within biological macromolecules, like proteins, and to study their interactions with surrounding molecules.
