Photodissociation of Weak Bonds: The Spectroscopy and Vibrational Dynamics of Molecular Complexes

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 470))

Abstract

We discuss the application of high resolution infrared spectroscopy to the study of weakly bound molecular complexes formed in a molecular beam. The focus is on the use of the optothermal method to study the spectroscopy of the parent complex and to characterize the fragments resulting from their photodissociation. In the former case we consider several examples were the spectroscopy of the complex is directly sensitive to the associated wide amplitude motion. We consider the influence of large external electric fields on the eigenstates of these complexes. In the photofragmentation experiments we make use of the orientation imposed by this electric field to aid in the characterization of the final state distributions of the fragments. We also discuss the possibility of modifying the structure and dynamics of these complexes using an external field.
