Abstract

Factors that contribute to the formability of metallic glasses are discussed from a microscopic point of view. We focus in particular on the atomic size factor and its effect on the topology of the structure. A universal local topological instability criterion is proposed to explain melting, solid state amorphization, glass transition, as well as composition range for glass formation by rapid cooling of the melt.
