Abstract

Membrane technology can offer an enormous contribution to the development of biotechnological processes in the agro-food industry. The separation features of membrane systems, when coupled to chemical biotransformations, permit reduction in plant space, in capital costs and, generally, better overall performances.

In this paper the attention is focused on the immobilization of biocatalyst, enzymes or whole cells, in membrane systems, characterized by different configurations. Afterwards a brief review of some biotechnological applications in the agro-food industry is presented.
