Abstract

In the pioneering era of heart transplantation, an age limit of 50 years was established for the recipient of a heart transplant. This was mainly due to the weight of the steroids in conventional immunosuppressive therapy. The introduction of Cyclosporin allowed the extension of this selection criteria and several authors (Carrier et al. 1986; Miller et al. 1988; Frazier et al. 1988) have reported satisfactory results in patients over 55 years of age; they found identical survival rates, reduced rejection rates (Renlund et al. 1987) and identical rates of infection.
