Abstract

Integration of information flows throughout the extensive network of humans and computational resources is the “key” to the next generation of practices in process operations planning, monitoring and control. Such practices will require, (a) change in the goals and structure of management and (b) new paradigms in the design of the requisite computer-aided environments. In this paper we discuss both of these issues. We present a structured approach to the conception and deployment of a computeraided environment that supports the hierarchy of engineering tasks, such as (i) planning, scheduling, and controlling process operations, and (ii) monitoring, analysis, diagnosis, and evaluation of operational experience. In addition, we argue that the real benefits from the deployment of an integrated information processing system, as the above, depend on a fundamental change in management philosophy. The Plan-DoCheck-Act (PDCA) paradigm emulates the corrective benefits of feedback control and leads to far more streamlined and efficient operations.
