Abstract

The development of metal carbonyl cluster chemistry in the last 30 years was stimulated by the perspective of using these derivatives as active and selective homogeneous catalysts; unfortunately this aspect was overestimated. The efficiency of clusters is severely limited by the low stability of the metal frame under the conditions required for some reactions, or by the difficulty of releasing the organic moieties without affecting the iratal core. Only a limited number of examples of intact cluster catalysis are known [1]. On the other hand, the difficulty of clusters in releasing organic moieties has been exploited for obtaining “models” of labile intermediates which could not be trapped in the reactions of mono- or binuclear catalysts [2].
