Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide an explanation of the governmental point of view on naturally produced organohalogens. Because of the complexity of the group of organohalogens the attention will be focused predominantly on organochlorines. The term ‘organochlorines’ describes a broad range of chemicals of divers chemical structure, ranging from simple aliphatic substances to complex chlorinated aromatic and polycyclic substances. Organochlorines are produced by both biogenic and anthropogenic sources. Policy can be made only for the anthropogenic sources. Therefore the anthropogenic sources of organochlorines will be discussed firstly, followed by a discussion on the significance of biogenic sources in the process of policy-making.
