Abstract

This paper describes various possible applications of optical time domain reflectometer in the mining industry. Emerging trends are presented to show how the principle of OTDR can be used as distributed temperature sensor. A new concept of this technique is enunciated for the measurement of displacement of rock mass which may be used for the remote monitoring of strata movement above a longwall coal mine, collapse of a longwall panel, opencast mine, mine subsidence, underground nuclear tests.
